Hyundai Kona’s owner had reportedly bought the electric vehicle in March. While no one was injured, the force of the blast was such that the door of the garage was ripped off and landed across the street.

A Hyundai Kona electric vehicle caught fire and exploded inside the garage of a bungalow on July 26 in Ile Bizard, Montreal (Canada). The EV was reportedly plugged in when the explosion took place.

The incident is being investigated by the Montreal fire department. The owner of Hyundai Kona had bought the electric vehicle in March, CBC reported. While no one was injured, the force of the blast was such that the door of the garage was ripped off and landed across the street.

Hyundai had launched Kona in India on July 9 for a starting price of Rs 25.30 lakh (ex-showroom, India). On July 19, the carmaker reported that it had received 120 confirmed bookings for Hyundai Kona in India.

Hyundai Kona is available in 15 dealerships across 11 cities in India. A permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor is available with the electric SUV. It delivers 136 PS and 395 Nm of peak torque and is offered with a shift-by-wire automatic transmission. Powering the motor is a 39.2 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery with liquid-cooling technology. It gets Eco+, Eco, Comfort and Sport driving modes and is capable of making 0-100 kmph in just 9.7 seconds. The company has provided paddle shifters for adjustable regenerative braking. The vehicle’s ARAI-certified range is 452 km per full charge.

Hyundai Kona features an intaglio patterned front grille with an integrated charging port, bi-function LED headlamps with LED DRLs, LED tail lamps and skid plate. It also gets 17-inch alloy wheels, roof rails and rear spoiler. Inside the cabin of Kona, there are features like leather seats, multi-function steering wheel, fully digital instrument cluster and 17.77 cm floating touchscreen infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.
