Is Tamil Nadu To Become Global Leader in Wind Power? As per reports, the Indian state of Tamil Nadu may soon become a global leader in the field of wind power. A report compiled by the IEEFA predict that Tamil Nadu by the year 2027 will have more than 50% of its power generated from solar and wind powers, also known as ‘zero emission’ technologies.

Currently, the state has a capacity of generating 7.85 GW of wind power which is already higher than world leaders Denmark and Sweden. The solar installations in the state could over the next decade double up to 13.5 GW, the report states. The installations could thus take Tamil Nadu’s renewable energy capacity to over 67 percent of the total energy generations. The state currently has a population strength that its triple of Australia with the GDP at par with Ukraine and Sri Lanka. With such a massive economy, the state now needs to work on transforming its power industry and reducing the addiction to coal.

Coal Continues To Be A Challenge For Tamil Nadu
In order to maintain an annual GDP growth of 7%for the state, Tamil Nadu can shift its focus on renewable resources such as solar and wind as the drop in prices for installation and operation for the same can now compete with that of coal sources. The report from IEEFA further states that Tamil Nadu needs to work on reduction of usage of coal resources as it is no longer needed. It states that the electricity generated from coal is twice as expensive as that of solar or wind.

The state currently has over 22.5 GW of coal power plants in future prospects pursuing which will result in weakening of the state’s finances. The state, however, has a long way to go to becoming 100 percent dependent on zero emissions technologies due to the seasonal differences that allow for wind power to be generated only from May to October.
