Government-sponsored Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) is exhibiting in-house developed integrated autonomous driving system, solid-state lithium-ion batteries and other innovations at Taipei International Automobile Electronics Show (AutoTronics Taipei) 2019 during April 24-27.

While many autonomous driving solutions require a GPS technology to operate, ITRI’s integrated autonomous driving system is based on integration of SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) technology, AI-based deep learning and high-precision 3D dynamic map database and can recognize category and location of dynamic obstacles. The system also works in basement levels and tunnels where wireless communication signals are easily disrupted, according to director general Hu Jwu-sheng for Mechanical and Mechatronics Systems Research Laboratories under ITRI.

The system can be installed on pickup trucks, sedan cars, SUVs, buses and trucks and has been experimented in outdoor fields, Hu said. Global market value for autonomous driving is expected to grow to US$42 billion by 2025 and further to US$77 billion in 2035, ITRI cited figures from US-based Boston Consulting Group.

ITRI-developed solid-state lithium-ion batteries feature energy density of 350Wh/kg, roughly double that of conventional lithium-ion batteries at 140-180Wh/kg. Such batteries can be used in electric vehicles, electric buses and electric scooters. ITRI has already signed contracts with local battery cell makers and Germany-based chemical material makers to co-develop such batteries.

In addition, ITRI is also showcasing iRoadSafe, a V2X (vehicle-to-everything)-based smart road safety warning system to prevent collisions on roads as well as a DSRC (dedicated short-range communications) OBU (on-board unit) and a 5G-based C-V2X (cellular V2X) system.

In related news, ITRI on April 24 signed for cooperation with the government of Hsinchu City, northern Taiwan, with the latter to provide the area of Nanliao Fishing Harbor in the city as an open filed for ITRI to undertake road testing for in-house-developed autonomous driving vehicles.

The city government is promoting intelligent transportation in the area, in line with use of the area for road testing for autonomous driving vehicles, the city government said. The city government plans to further provide other areas in the city for such road testing.
