Mumbai: State Minister of Energy, New and Renewable Energy Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Thursday informed Maharashtra Vidhan Parishad that the legal process of land acquisition for the construction of 9,900 Mega Watt nuclear power plant in Jaitapur in Ratnagiri has been completed.

If constructed, the Jaitapur nuclear project will be the largest nuclear power generating station in the world. However, Shiv Sainiks and local residents are strongly opposing the project citing the generation of hazardous chemical effects when the plant becomes operational.

Mr Bawankule disclosed the information while replying to a question raised by the Congress member Anant Gadgil.

The construction of the project was finalized by a deal signed on March 10 between the French nuclear engineering firm Areva S A and Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCI).
