Wondering about the applications of C&I ESS? We have got you covered!

In a bid to achieve ambitious targets under the RE100 initiative, several companies are switching to solar energy for renewable sources of energy. The major challenge faced to attain this goal is the availability of an efficient Energy Storage System (ESS). To counter this Sungrow, a leading player in inverter brands and avid preacher of clean energy introduced ST129CP-50HV Series Solution for Commercial and Industrial (C&I) purposes.

During a webinar conducted by EQ Magazine on “Outlook for Lebanon Solar Energy- Opportunities and Challenges”, Mohamed Galal, Solution Engineer at Sungrow (Middle East), spoke about the C&I ESS application scenario and introduced a solution.

The solution has a scalable configuration providing two-five hours of a variety of configuration options. It covers a wide power range from 50KW to 1MW on-grid and far more off-grid. This C&I solution has a modular design with a battery unit, PCS unit, switchgear, transformer for upgrade operation, and AC outdoor cabinet.

This solution is an economic alternative and a more reliable counterpart. The lithium and ion batteries with 100 per cent Depth of Discharge (DOD) ensure 15 years of performance life under standard conditions. The safety of the system is driven by thermal management design and hierarchical linkage protection. To increase reliability, there is a temperature control system for the battery. The design ensures a standard operating temperature between 18 and 28 degrees Celsius. For the Power Conditioning System (PCS), the air design helps the device to run in a low-temperature zone for longer sustenance.

In the EQ webinar, hosted by Rachelle Kassouf, Director Engineering at Green Essence (Lebanon), Galal explained the solution’s I-Solar cloud technology. He claimed that cloud technology will help remotely monitor the operating status of the equipment and switch operating modes. It will also view fault data and alarm information for remote adjustment. To enhance revenue generation, its built-in EMS factors in multiple operation mode selections as well.

The ease of installation is a big selling point for the solution. It is prewired in the factory saving the trouble of complicated set-up. Its outdoor cabinet design enables ease of transportation and on-site installation. This solution is ideal for harsh conditions and off-shore scenarios because of its C5 anti-corrosion grade coating.

Applications of C&I ESS

Talking about the application scenario, Galal mentioned several conditions where C&I ESS can be applicable:
1. Demand Management: Peak shaving to maintain demands in the limit as per indications and to have energy storage at peak times.
2. Peak and Valley Arbitrage: Charge in the valley time and discharge in the peak time to gain the benefits like the cost of electricity is more in the day than in the night.
3. Maximizing Self-consumption: Storing energy in the battery in case of excessive power generation and using it when in need.
4. Backup Power: The buffer created through energy stored can be useful during power outages post-natural disasters like earthquakes or tsunami.
5. Micro-grid: Support on-grid or off-grid mode, support multiple energy such as DG (diesel generator) and PV (solar plant).
