Liberia to Benefit from India’s $2 Billion Solar Projects for Africa
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has submitted to the House of Representatives for ratification into Law “The International Solar Alliance (ISA) Framework Agreement.” The President’s letter states that the objective of the agreement is to create a collaborative platform for increased deployment of solar energy technologies to enhance security and sustainable development in member countries and will improve access to energy and opportunities for better living in rural as well as remote areas. “The Agreement when passed into law will make Liberia benefit from the Government of India’s special fund of US$2 billion for solar projects in Africa from a concession Line of Credit for Africa. Consequently, this initiative will reduce the cost of energy and among other things promote investments that depend heavily on the use of electricity,” the President wrote. She added that the Government of Liberia stands to benefit because jobs will be created, “revenue will be generated, development will take place, security will be enhanced, the high cost of living will reduce and favorable living conditions will be availed.”
“I, therefore, request your timely consideration in ratifying into law, this important legislation that will complement Government’s efforts in achieving its developmental objectives and bringing affordable solar energy to Liberia.” Meanwhile, the House’s Plenary has unanimously accepted three separate letters from the Senate on the concurrence of the eleven engrossed bills of the House . The lawmakers noted the concurrence notification yesterday during the 58th day sitting of the 6th session.
It may be recalled that the House previously approved the eleven (11) bills and forwarded them to the Senate for concurrence.
The engrossed bills are: An Act to ratify the Investment Incentive Agreement between Liberia and RIA Hotels Resorts; Uniform Code of Military Justice of the Armed Forces of Liberia; An Act to ratify the pre-financing agreement for the rigid pavement of the 24.5km of existing secondary roads from Klay to DC Clarke in Bomi County, and 51km of selected neighborhood community roads in Monrovia and its environs.
Others are an Act requiring pre-export value addition to natural resources; and an Act to ratify the financial agreement (rural community finance project) between Liberia and the International Fund for Agricultural Development, an Act creating Toweh Town as a City, within Boe-Quilla Administrative District, Tappita Statutory District, Nimba County, and provision for the governance of same; An Act creating Boe-Bonglay as a Township, within Boe-Quilla Administrative District, Tappitta Statutory District, Nimba County, Liberia and provision for the governance of same; An Act creating Lorplay as a Township, within Gbear-gblor Chiefdom, Tappita Statutory District, Nimba County, Liberia and provision for the governance of same and an Act creating Vahn Town as a Township, within Gbear-Gblor Chiefdom, Tappita Statutory District, Nimba County, Liberia and provision for the governance of same.
The rest are an Act to create Mahla Township as a city within Gbear-Mehnsonah Administrative District, in Yarmin Mehnsonoh Statutory District, Lower Nimba County, Liberia and provision for the governance of same and an Act of creating Behwalay town as a city within Kparblee Administrative District, Tappita Statutory District, Nimba County, Liberia and provision for the governance of same.
