Mercedes-Benz India’s EQS 580 is being assembled at the company’s plant in Pune.

Mercedes-Benz India launched the country’s first locally assembled luxury electric vehicle in the form of the EQS 580 last month. Highlighting its certification as India’s longest-range electric vehicle (EV), the EQS 580 promises to blow away range worries over displays with an ARAI-certified range of 857 km. For critics of electric vehicles, who insist that such vehicles are not meant for highways, the Mercedes-Benz EQS could be the perfect rebuttal.

While an ARAI certified range of over 850 km is impressive, real-world numbers are likely to be lower and depend on many factors. But even if one takes the most conservative range number between 650 km and 700 km, it still means that this luxury EV can be perfectly comfortable on long journeys.

Why is EV range important for highway travel?

Indian highways are dotted with lots of petrol pumps and it’s almost always easy to find one when a regular car is running low on fuel. But it’s almost impossible to drive in a park for trams that typically have an ideal range of between 350 km and 400 km. The fear of being trapped without a charging point in sight often keeps electric vehicle owners from driving out onto the open road.

While the country’s toll infrastructure is improving, it is mainly focused on large cities and towns. The Delhi-Jaipur Electric Expressway is expected to open at some point next year but more such highways will take a long time. Obviously then, an EV with a range like that of the Mercedes EQS 580 means most long trips won’t be as stressful as it won’t claim a charge for at least 650 km. This is as good as an S-Class with a 65-liter fuel tank and an average range of about 10 km/h. It is true that while the S-Class will be fine after 650 km after a full charge and the EQS may need to be charged, chances are most highway trips don’t see the owner driving more than 600 odd kilometers. at a stretch of road. It is also not recommended because the driver is tired and may lack concentration.

What motorway trips can you plan with the Mercedes EQS 580?

Mercedes claims that the EQS 580 is an EV capable of running on Indian highways and can cover most distances before needing to be plugged in. The Germans claim that under the ARAI certified range, the EQS 580 is passable between Mumbai and Pune, Delhi and Jaipur, Chennai and Puducherry, Kolkata and Durgapur, Coimbatore and Madurai, and Cochin and Trivandrum.

The Mercedes EQS 580 can also make journeys like Mumbai to Goa, Bengaluru to Hyderabad and Mumbai to Ahmedabad before needing to be charged. All of these route options are indicative and suggested by Mercedes.

What is the price of Mercedes EQS 580?

As a flagship electric sedan from Mercedes, the EQS 580 has a substantial price tag 1.55 crore (factory). But considering this is a bit less than the S-Class and the fact that it only requires servicing once every two years and has significantly lower running costs than petrol models, the EQS 580 has can make sense to those who can afford it. .
