Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (TYO:7211) announced on Saturday it has put into operation a 5-MW rooftop solar system at its factory in Thailand.

The photovoltaic (PV) plant was built atop the company’s production and sales unit Laemchabang Factory of Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand) Co Ltd, or (MMTh), Mitsubishi’s largest manufacturing centre outside Japan.

According to the press release, MMTh is also planning to install a 2-MW solar power array “in the near future.” Together, the output of these two PV facilities is expected to cut the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from Mitsubishi’s production activities at the site by more than 6,100 tonnes per year.

At present, the Japanese tech giant is working on initiatives to cut its carbon footprint by 40% from fiscal 2014 levels by promoting renewables and developing utility-scale solar projects at domestic and overseas manufacturing centres, it said.

MMTh operates car-production plants and an engine factory in Taiwan’s Chonburi Province.
