Researching More Efficient Battery Technology to Stabilize Electrical Grid, Address Climate and Energy Stress, and Deliver Value to New Yorkers

ROCHESTER, N.Y.: NOHMs Technologies, Inc. (NOHMs) today announced it will develop batteries that are optimized for indoor use and conform to New York State building and fire codes. Funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) Technology and Business Innovation group, NOHMs will create optimized electrolyte formulations that overcome traditional barriers to commercialization associated with ionic liquid (IL) electrolyte, including performance and cost. The final goal of this project is to demonstrate an energy storage system (EES) that meets performance and to establish a commercialization path for the new materials, including manufacturing process and cost assessment, market studies and regulatory requirements, and estimates of greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions.

A prototype battery will be built and undergo rigorous performance and safety testing against regulatory standards for indoor batteries. NOHMs also will collaborate with experts from Rochester Institute of Technology’s Golisano Institute for Sustainability to evaluate potential savings of greenhouse gas emissions compared with the current grid energy mix, analyze regulatory and market requirements for urban electrical energy storage, and establish a path to commercialization, laying groundwork for rapid, large-scale production to support New York’s swiftly modernizing energy electricity system.

The project supports New York State’s target of 3,000 megawatts of energy storage by 2030, as well as its comprehensive Energy Storage Roadmap. Released in June 2018, the New York State Energy Storage Roadmap identifies recommended actions to accelerate the deployment of energy storage projects in the state. Combined with solar and other emerging renewable technologies in New York State, improved battery storage may reduce electricity costs, provide a stable supply during peak usage, or operate critical systems during a grid outage, especially in cities, where energy storage is limited. Ionic liquids are non-flammable, non-volatile, ion-conducting materials that remain liquid over a broad temperature range. NOHMs has invested more than a decade in the research and development of functional ionic liquids specifically for stability and safety in lithium ion battery systems, also used in mobile electronics and electric vehicles.
