In Short : Housing societies in Pune are cutting electricity bills significantly by adopting rooftop solar systems. Projects like Westford Co-op, Gini Bellissimo, and Bhagyashree Apartments save lakhs annually through solar power, aided by government subsidies and net metering. These initiatives, supported by PCMC’s Green Society drive, also reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable living across residential communities in the city.

In Detail : Several housing societies in Pune are turning to rooftop solar systems to reduce electricity expenses and embrace sustainable living. The Westford Co-op Housing Society in Pimple Saudagar installed a 65 kW solar plant in early 2024, helping them save approximately ₹15 lakh annually on power bills.

In Kothrud, Bhagyashree Apartment became the first fully solar-powered residential complex in the district by installing a 30 kW system under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana. Residents there now pay zero electricity charges, saving close to ₹35,000 each month.

Gini Bellissimo CHS in Dhanori, home to 276 flats, set up an 80 kW rooftop plant in April 2025. The installation is expected to slash ₹18 lakh from annual electricity costs while reducing carbon emissions by roughly 175 tonnes.

The Horizons Society in Wakad recently commissioned a 125 kWp solar plant on Maharashtra Day. It powers utilities like elevators, sewage treatment, and EV charging stations, resulting in monthly savings of about ₹3 lakh and cutting 150 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

These societies have benefited from net metering policies and subsidies provided under the PM Surya Ghar scheme and state-level Central Financial Assistance (CFA). With payback periods of just three to five years, they are positioned to achieve substantial long-term savings.

Pune’s municipal authorities, particularly PCMC through its Green Society Initiative, are encouraging more residential communities to adopt eco-friendly practices. The program not only supports solar installations but also promotes sustainable living standards, positioning Pune as a leader in urban clean energy transitions.
