Guwahati: Assam’s road to achieving net zero emission target needs massive augmentation in harnessing power from renewable sources of energy, said experts at the Round Table Session: Net Zero Emission by 2070- Assam State Agenda held in Guwahati on Wednesday.

ICC and TERI, under the umbrella of the centre of excellence for CSR and sustainability conducted the roundtable conference to discuss and deliberate on various initiatives on India’s target of net zero emission by 2070 in the context of Assam.

Ravi S Prasad, additional chief secretary, state environment and forest department, said a state’s road to net zero emission will require an increase in renewable sources of energy as well as exploring the feasibility of non-fossil fuels. In the context of Assam, he suggested that options can be taken into consideration like solarised tea gardens, electric vehicles, hydrogen power plants, green buildings and their associated ratings. “Carbon credit and carbon finance is of immense relevance in the current scenario and hence such dialogues at the state level should prepare a roadmap for achieving the respective goals,” he said.

Arup Kumar Misra, chairman of Assam Pollution Control Board, initiated a dialogue by a note that development should not happen at the cost of natural resource degradation and if irreversible changes happen in nature, there will be severe repercussions. He said Assam needs to contribute towards achieving the national net zero emission goal and the state needs to have more carbon sinks. He concluded his address by emphasising the need of investing in awareness generation and mobilisation among children and youth groups.
