Industry leaders and experts will discuss the challenges of attaining a sustainable environment while meeting the needs of a growing economy during a forum of The Manila Times today, June 30.

The forum, dubbed “Propelling Renewable Energy against Climate Change,” will tackle how the Philippines can address climate change by tapping renewable energy (RE).

Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian, chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy, will deliver the keynote speech.

Former National Renewable Energy Board chairman Monalisa Dimalanta; Liter of Light and My Shelter Foundation founder Illac Diaz, and Greenpeace Southeast Asia Executive Director Naderev “Yeb” Saño will be the guest speakers.

Meanwhile, Solar Philippines President Leandro Leviste, Aboitiz Power Corp. President and Chief Executive Officer Emmanuel Rubio, WeGen President Charlie Ayco, and LONGi Solar Regional Sales Director for Asia Pacific Sam Zheng will sit in the panel discussion.

Broadcast live on The Manila Times Facebook page and YouTube channel from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the forum will be moderated by The Times President and Chief Executive Officer Dante “Klink” Ang 2nd and business columnist Ben Kritz.

Ang said he expects The Manila Times forum to present ways on how to avert power interruptions in the future.

“For the long term, we hope to discuss the development plans for new plants, and the energy mix,” Ang added.

Despite the country having vast RE, coal remained the main source of energy in the past years.

In its “2020 Power Statistics” report, the Department of Energy said coal was the most utilized source at 41.7.

The government aims to achieve at least 35 percent of RE share by 2030 and increase it to 50 percent by 2040.

The Manila Times will hold the energy forum in partnership with AboitizPower, LONGi Solar, SunSmart Solar Power Technology Inc., and WeGen.

The Manila Times’ special partners include Conrad Manila; British Chamber of Commerce Philippines, French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the Philippines, Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc., Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines, Italian Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines, Management Association of the Philippines; and i TMT TV.
