Siemens Energy AG (ETR:ENR) will install a pilot electrolyser facility of up to 200 MW in Egypt as part of a broader plan to develop a “robust green hydrogen industry” in the country.

The German company said on Wednesday it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) to jointly explore opportunities for hydrogen production and export in Egypt.

As a first step, the duo will work on a project that calls for the installation of between 100 MW and 200 MW of electrolyser capacity, which the partners say will help set the stage for a wider industry development by driving early technology deployment, testing the regulatory environment, establishing off-take relations and defining logistic concepts.

According to the statement, Siemens Energy and EEHC will jointly promote investment, technology transfer and implementation of projects based on renewable hydrogen.

“The development of a homegrown hydrogen ecosystem and value chain in Egypt has the potential to deliver a more sustainable and prosperous future for Egyptians,” said Christian Bruch, president and CEO of Siemens Energy.

The MoU comes on the heels of a letter of intent from January, under which Siemens Energy and EEHC agreed to form a long-term cooperation to scale up Egypt’s hydrogen industry.
