In response to the filing of the stipulation negotiated by SolarCity, the Bureau of Consumer Protection, NV Energy and Public Utilities Commission Staff to grandfather solar customers in Nevada, Jon Wellinghoff, former Consumer Advocate for the State of Nevada and current SolarCity Chief Policy Officer, issued the following statement: “This agreement is a victory not only for 32,000 solar customers in Nevada, but also for all Americans who expect these investments to be protected. We urge the Public Utilities Commissioners to quickly ratify our agreement, in order to provide relief to our customers and all Nevada solar customers as soon as possible.”

In the agreement reached by SolarCity, the utility, Commission Staff, and the Bureau of Consumer Protection, all solar customers who applied to install rooftop solar before December 31, 2015 will be grandfathered under the net metering program they signed up under, which will be available for 20 years. With this agreement the utility and the State have affirmed that grandfathering should have been, and with this agreement would once again be, the law of the land. This joint agreement has been filed with the Public Utilities Commission for approval, and they are expected to rule on the agreement on Friday. This agreement came the same day as a Technical Advisory Committee of Governor Sandoval’s New Energy Industry Task Force approved recommendations that, if adopted by the Legislature, would restore Nevadans’ ability to choose to affordably install rooftop solar in the future.
