In Short : THDC India Limited (THDCIL) and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-Delhi) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on advancing research in green hydrogen, recycling technologies, and electric vehicles (EVs). This partnership aims to foster innovation and develop sustainable solutions in these critical areas, aligning with India’s goals of promoting renewable energy, reducing carbon emissions, and fostering a green economy. By leveraging the expertise of both institutions, the collaboration is poised to contribute significantly to India’s efforts in transitioning towards a cleaner and more sustainable future.

In Detail : THDC India Limited (THDCIL), a central public sector enterprise, and IIT Delhi have agreed to collaborate on research and development in areas such as electric car batteries, green hydrogen, geothermal technologies, and waste management and recycling.

Renewable energy sources are typically more environmentally friendly than fossil fuel sources. They are less harmful to the environment than traditional energy methods. Using renewable energy resources to generate electricity decreases greenhouse gas emissions from the power industry and contributes to climate change mitigation.

The institution said that the country’s biggest power producer, THDCIL, will collaborate with IIT Delhi to undertake research studies, pilot projects, and consultancy engagements headed by academic members on Thursday.

The MoU was signed last week by S. K. Chauhan, HoD (RD) from THDCIL, and Prof. Naresh Bhatnagar, Dean (RD), IIT Delhi. The deal will be in effect for five years.

According to the institute, these collaborative efforts will cover a wide range of research domains, including but not limited to energy conservation, alternatives to lithium-ion storage batteries, nanotechnology for electric vehicle batteries, green hydrogen, geothermal technology, climate change issues, waste management/recycling, water management/conservation, vortex-induced vibrations, tunneling techniques, biofuels, grid stability improvements, and various other topics.

While commenting on the critical areas of cooperation envisioned in the MoU, Vishnoi, Chairman and Managing Director of THDC India Limited, said that the THDCIL would aggressively seek out IIT Delhi to launch joint projects and interact with research groups inside the university.

“THDCIL has committed to providing comprehensive financial support for operational expenses and the cost of research and development activities. This support will empower IIT Delhi to continuously undertake RD projects on mutually agreed terms, cementing their role as a knowledge partner in collaborative research efforts“, Vishnoi said.

According to the agreement, IIT Delhi will provide critical infrastructure assistance and access to scientific, engineering, and technological skills. These tools will be critical in supporting RD efforts that are aligned with the institute’s academic interests.

Prof. Naresh Bhatnagar, Dean (RD), IIT Delhi, expressed gratitude to THDCIL management for providing financial assistance for project commissioning in the fields of batteries, communications and applications robotics, and so on.

To increase the effect of this collaboration, IIT Delhi, with the support of THDCIL, will use its expertise to interact with national and international organizations.

According to the statement, this involvement is targeted at both fundamental and translational research answers. Furthermore, the institution will incorporate additional faculty members from important areas and efficiently promote joint activities.
