Hydrogen use is widely expected to grow drastically, in particular as it has the potential to decarbonise our society and avoid further global warming, as we explore this month. In fact, we witness daily new investments in hydrogen production and applications.
These new applications involve newcomers with very often the brightest of ideas, but not necessarily a ‘solid’ background in hydrogen safety. Moreover, applications move from industrial B2B environments to public B2C environments such as hydrogen vehicles and refuelling stations. This is both the view and the concern at the forefront of industrial gas safety associations the world over.
It is no longer the long-standing industrial specialists that come into contact with hydrogen and its applications, but a large group of people and organisations that may be less knowledgeable or trained in its safe storage, handling and use. And it is widely agreed that the only good roll-out of hydrogen technologies and applications, is a safe roll-out.
