After the administration identified as many as 129 polling booths in Bareilly district with no electricity, district election officer and district magistrate Surendra Singh ordered village panchayats to install solar-powered lights in these booths.

The Election Commission has already issued directions that ensure proper light arrangements, drinking water, toilets and other basic amenities be provided at every booth.

DM Singh, who was awarded best DEO in the country by EC in 2012 for conducting polls in Firozabad district, said, “We identified 129 polling booths which are yet to get an electric connection. At all such booths, we will keep a petromax lamp for illumination. Besides, village panchayats concerned have been directed to install solar lights at these polling booths.”

The district election officer said a total of 1,009 polling booths were marked as “critical” in 62 pockets in the district and 174 anti-social elements have already been identified and action taken against them.

Sharing statistics of the district, the DEO said 30.52 lakh voters would be exercising their franchises in the upcoming election. Among them, 13.83 lakh are women voters. “This time, the female ratio has improved to 829 from 822 per 1,000 male voters. Besides, electoral population ratio (EPR) has also increased from 60.37 to 61.76 which is very close to the state average of 62,” he added.
