The road tax and registration fee waivers for EVs in the state are not the only provisions aimed at encouraging the increased adoption of EVs in the state.

We have some terrific news to share this morning, folks. The government of Odisha recently decided to completely waive not only the road tax but also the registration fees levied on electric vehicles retailed in the state. What that means is that EV buyers in Odisha will not be required to pay either the road tax or the registration fees.

This new waiver is in addition to the Odisha government’s subsidy on electric vehicles that are already offered in the state. The local government first announced the Odisha EV policy earlier this year following the advisory by NITI Aayog to Indian states.

But let us focus on the new waivers first; the state transport department in the state issued a notification regarding this waiver this past weekend. The notification informing the public of the local government’s decision read “The state government in exercise of the powers conferred under the Odisha Motor Vehicles Taxation Act, 1975, do hereby allow 100 per cent exemption of motor vehicles taxes and also registration fees in respect of all types of battery operated vehicles (electric vehicles) during the policy period, i.e. up to December 31, 2025.”

It must be noted that the road tax and registration fee waivers for EVs in the state are not the only provisions aimed at encouraging the increased adoption of EVs in the state. Under the purview of Odisha’s electric vehicle policy, the state offers the following incentives during the policy period (five years):

  • Financial incentives for manufacturing industries, scrapping, etc.
  • Interest subvention in EV loans
  • 15 per cent subsidy: Maximum of ₹5,000 for two wheelers, ₹10,000 for three wheelers, and ₹50,000 for four-wheelers on the base price

In addition to that, the local government also intends to invest of ₹15,000 crore in local manufacturing of EVs, EV components, battery manufacturing/assembly, charging infrastructure equipment manufacturing, etc.
