In Detail : The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has made significant progress, benefiting 16.51 lakh households across India as of July 2025. The update was shared by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, highlighting the scheme’s rapid adoption.

Launched in February 2024, the initiative aims to promote rooftop solar installations for residential households, offering free electricity and financial assistance for installation.

The scheme targets one crore households by the end of financial year 2026–27. It is a major part of India’s clean energy transition, aiming to reduce dependence on grid electricity and lower carbon emissions.

Beneficiaries receive subsidies and support for installing rooftop solar systems, which can significantly reduce monthly power bills. The electricity generated also helps in feeding surplus energy back into the grid.

Maharashtra has emerged as the leading state in terms of installations, followed by Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. These states have seen a surge in applications and successful rollouts under the scheme.

The government has also launched an online portal to streamline the application process, making it easier for citizens to register, track progress, and receive subsidies directly.

Minister Joshi emphasized that the scheme is not just about power savings but also about empowering citizens to become active participants in the green energy movement.

Rooftop solar adoption under the scheme is expected to significantly contribute to India’s renewable energy targets and help reduce the overall burden on the national grid during peak hours.

With continued support from the central and state governments, the PM Surya Ghar scheme is on track to transform energy consumption at the household level, making solar energy accessible, affordable, and sustainable.
