In support of the Buy America Act, ABB has established a manufacturing facility in Portland, Oregon to meet the needs of transit agencies across the US

The mass-transit-related procurement provision, called the “Buy America Act” institutes requirements intended to give preference to the use of domestically produced materials for procurements funded at least in part by federal funds.

Ensuing Buy America compliance allows ABB to provide more jobs today and in the future in the United States, with the additional lower carbon footprint benefit that a localized presence delivers.

“In order for ABB to expand its offering into the United States and meet our customers’ needs even faster, we are delighted to announce an investment in domestic manufacturing” says Derek Monk, General Manager at ABB, “The facility in Portland, Oregon will build ABB Charging Infrastructure for electric buses. This will help contribute to a stronger economic as well as a sustainable future for the entire country through the support of local businesses and communities.”

On-route Opportunity and Depot charging systems

ABB’s On-route Opportunity Charging System is typically used for endpoint opportunity charging of electric city buses, enabling zero emission public transport in cities. With its automated rooftop connection and typical charge time of 3–6 minutes, the system can easily be integrated in existing bus lines by installing chargers at endpoints and/or terminals.

The ABB Overnight Depot Charging System is equipped with a CCS Type 1 or Type 2 connector allowing charging at 50kW, 100kW and 150kW DC. The arrangement offers flexibility as the charge control box can be installed up to 20m (65 ft) from the heavy vehicle charger (HVC) cabinet and in a series in the bus depot. Recent technology advancements also allow for sequential charging where one charger cabinet can connect to up to three depot charge boxes and automatically power the boxes consecutively. This reduces overall peak power demand at the depot while charging multiple vehicles from a common configuration.

Compliant with both OppCharge and Combined Charging System (CCS) standards, ABB’s HVC systems are compatible with most major bus OEMs and ensure a future-proof infrastructure development due to the system modularity, upgradability and open-standard approach.

ABB’s HVCs are part of the ABB AbilityTM portfolio of digital solutions, benefiting from cloud connectivity which allows for remote diagnosis and management, ensuring reliable and efficient infrastructure for bus passengers.

Global leader in sustainable transport solutions

ABB, synonymous with electric-transportation breakthroughs during its 130-year history, has become a global leader in connected DC charging systems for electric vehicles. Some 10,500 ABB DC fast chargers are now installed in 73 countries, more fast chargers than any other manufacturer, while ABB’s partnership with the FIA Formula E Championship is advancing e-mobility for a sustainable future.

Additionally, Fortune Magazine recently ranked ABB #8 on its list of companies that are “changing the world” for the advances it has made in e-mobility and electric vehicle charging.

ABB (ABBN: SIX Swiss Ex) is a pioneering technology leader in power grids, electrification products, industrial automation and robotics and motion, serving customers in utilities, industry and transport & infrastructure globally. Continuing a history of innovation spanning more than 130 years, ABB today is writing the future of industrial digitalization with two clear value propositions: bringing electricity from any power plant to any plug and automating industries from natural resources to finished products. As title partner in ABB Formula E, the fully electric international FIA motorsport class, ABB is pushing the boundaries of e-mobility to contribute to a sustainable future. ABB operates in more than 100 countries with about 147,000 employees. www.abb.com
