Volkswagen debuts electric Buggy concept ATV at Geneva auto show
If you squint at Volkswagen’s latest reveal, you might be able to see all the way back to 1960s California.
Volkswagen on Monday debuted an electric concept all-terrain vehicle dubbed the I.D. Buggy, saying it draws design inspiration “from the classic Californian dune buggies of the 60s.”
The ATV joins VW’s growing roster of electric concept vehicles with the I.D. nameplate, including a forthcoming return of the VW microbus called the I.D. Buzz.
It’s unclear whether VW intends to make the ATV or sell it in the U.S. Automakers often introduce concept vehicles to gauge the public’s reaction before deciding how to proceed.
The I.D. Buggy has a four-cylinder “boxer” engine in its rear, capable of 201 horsepower and 155 miles of battery range based on non-U.S. global standards. (American test standards typically estimate shorter ranges.)
It goes from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 7.2 seconds with its top speed capped at 99 mph. It seats two but can be expanded for another two and can add an additional electric motor to enable four-wheel-drive.
The I.D. Buggy has 18-inch wheels, off-road tires, a reinforced windshield frame, rollover support, no doors and no roof.
It’s 160 inches long, 74.4 inches wide and 57.6 inches wide. It sits 9.4 inches off the ground.
With a “minimalist interior” and waterproof materials, the I.D. Buggy is made for no-frills driving.
