Dubai Supreme Council of Energy reviews Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2050
HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, has headed the Supreme Council’s 38th meeting, attended by HE Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Energy, Saif Humaid Al Falasi, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates National Oil Company Ltd (ENOC), Abdullah Abdul Kareem, Director General of the Department of Oil Affairs, Salim Bin Mesmar, Assistant Director-General for the Environment, Health and Safety sector at Dubai Municipality, Waleed Salman, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Nuclear Energy Committee, Nasser Hamad Bu Shehab, Director of the RTA’s Strategic Planning department, Keiron Ferguson, General Manager of Dubai Supply Authority, and Fred Chemin, Head of Production Development at the Dubai Petroleum Establishment.
The meeting’s agenda included the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and other programmes and initiatives launched by the council. The Council members reviewed and updated the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy for 2030, in light of Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to produce 75% of Dubai’s energy from clean sources by 2050.The attendees reviewed Etihad ESCO’s executive plan for energy demand management within the UAE, which will support the implementation of energy demand management under the supervision of Supreme Council in cooperation with its partners and other organisations. This falls in line with the Energy Demand Management Strategy which will reduce energy demand by 30% by 2030. The meeting also shed light on the Council’s achievements in 2015.
2015 saw the development of plans for a green transportation initiative. The Supreme Council of Energy has also developed an extensive plan consisting of future goals and a reporting system to reduce carbon emissions. This strategy is the first of its kind in the region, and will cut carbon emissions by 16% by 2021.The Supreme Council and its sub-organisations continue to contribute to the betterment of the Dubai Government in the fields of health and safety and environmental awareness. It has recently received the Best Government Organisation for Clean Energy award from MENASOL, in addition to being awarded the Golden Trophy for Special Achievements from Tatweej Academy.
“We discussed ‘No Vehicle Day,’ an initiative to encourage people to make better use of public transportation, to preserve the environment and reduce carbon emissions. The initiative was organised by the Dubai Municipality under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, and will be implemented on 21 February 2016. The Council intends to actively take part in the initiative,” said HE Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary General of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy.
