Lithuania on Friday launched its maiden offshore wind tender, seeking a developer to install up to 700 MW of generation capacity in its territorial waters in the Baltic Sea.

The competition for the site nearly 36 km (22.4 miles) off the coast that will host Lithuania’s first offshore wind farm will take place in several stages, the National Energy Regulatory Council (VERT) said on Thursday.

The minimum capacity to be deployed in the selected area is 580 MW and the maximum is 700 MW.

Interested developers have 60 calendar days until May 29 to submit documents that will be evaluated by a committee which will compile a list of those who meet the criteria for participation. The requirements for the developers seeking to take part in the competitive round were approved by the government earlier in March.

The second stage of the tender will take place only if at least two developers have met those criteria. The shortlisted candidates will be invited to submit proposals for the development fee.

The site will be awarded to the competitor who offers the highest development fee and meets national security interests. For the successful conclusion of the tender, at least two bidders must have filed bids in this stage, too.

The wind park will be built without state subsidies and should be connected to the grid by 2028.
