Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest car marker is currently going through a transition. The automobile giant announced earlier this year that they will not offer any diesel-powered vehicles in the Indian market after the new BS6 norms are put into effect in April 2020. The brand is also focussing on launching electric-powered products. A few days back, several reports claimed that the manufacturer has registered the Futuro-E name but the product that will get the name was not known.

A new report on ACI suggests that the name – Futuro-E will be put on the upcoming Maruti Suzuki electric SUV concept. The name is inspired by the Future-S concept, which was showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo in India. The Future-S concept was launched as the S-Presso earlier this year.

Since most of the manufacturers are working on the electric SUVs in India, Maruti Suzuki is expected to showcase the concept product that will take production form in the coming years. The production version of the Futuro-E will take on the likes of upcoming electric cars including Mahindra XUV300 EV and Tata Nexon EV. ACI also adds that it is unlikely that Maruti Suzuki will keep it only as an electric vehicle. It should be noted that Maruti Suzuki will launch the all-new Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza in the Indian market in 2021-2022 and it is highly likely that the Futuro-S will be the concept version of the upcoming vehicle.

The all-new Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza will also get a premium version, which will be sold through the premium Nexa dealerships and the rebadged/reworked version that will be sold through Toyota’s network in the country. An EV based on the next-generation Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza makes a lot more sense and will also allow the brand to save a lot of investment to develop a brand-new electric vehicle.

Before the launch of the production version of the Futuro-E, Maruti Suzuki India will launch the EV version of the WagonR. While it was expected to be launched in the Indian market next year, the launch has been delayed and the vehicle will be initially launched only for the cab fleet owners and cab drivers. The WagonR EV will be the first electric car from the brand and it has been spotted testing around India.

In the coming future, a lot of EVs are lined-up for the Indian market. Mahindra will launch the KUV100 EV and the XUV300 EV in the Indian market while MG Motors will launch the all-new eZS in the Indian market. Hyundai has already launched the Kona EV in the market.
