The rooftop grid connected solar power plant which is operational within the premises of Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) at Headland-Sada for generation of power is proving to be very effective.

The MPT has successfully commissioned a 200 kW rooftop grid connected solar power plant for
generation of power in September 2016, at a cost of Rs 1.45 cr with 5 years free warranty period and 5
years comprehensive annual maintenance contract as a Green Port Initiative with a payback period of 8
years.

The area utilised for installation of solar roof top plant is 4,300 sq mtrs. The two rooftop grid solar power plants are set up at the port administrative building and the other at the port hospital building Headland- Sada, both having a combined capacity of generating 1000 kwh/day approximately.
Solar energy is a renewable source of energy and also non-polluting and environment friendly and helps
to maintain a healthy planet. The solar power plants are easy to install and have a long life of 25 years
with low maintenance. The other major advantage of the solar power plant to the environment is that, it
can save carbon emissions of around 800 kg/day. Besides, excess power generated can be fed back to the
grid.

The Union Minister of Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari had inaugurated the 200kW solar power plant on September 22, 2016. The first quarter generating solar energy in 200 kW system is 116638 kWh (units).
