Panaji: Taking part in promoting solar power in the state, National Centre for Antarctica and Ocean Research (NCAOR), Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONCG) have decided to set up rooftop solar plants in Goa, which will generate three megawatts of power. NCAOR, MPT and ONGC has proposed to, each, set up one megawatt power plant. Government has plans to generate 150 megawatts of solar power in the state by 2022.
“NCAOR, MPT and ONCG have decided to set up 1MW solar PV grid-connected rooftop/groundmounted power project at identified buildings, locations, a Goa Energy Development Agency (GEDA) officer told TOI.
The GEDA officer said that NCAOR will set up a plan in association with GEDA and MPT and ONCG will set up their own plant. The officer said that the power generated by all these institutions will be connected to the grid by the power department.
The GEDA officer said India represents a fast growing economy and has ever increasing demand of energy. Recognizing the need to develop additional energy supply options, the government has laid strong emphasis on renewable energy. Solar energy is regarded as one of the fastest growing clean technologies in recent years.
To promote solar energy, the state electricity department and GEDA have conducted a study to set up rooftop solar plants across the state on government buildings. The state government had drafted ‘Solar Policy 2017’ which will help to set up solar power plants in the state to achieve overall energy security. The state government had received objections and suggestions for the solar policy.
“Once the Solar Policy 2017 is notified, it would speed up the process of setting solar power plants in the state,” the GEDA officer said. Policy will also ensure that the renewable purchase obligation (RPO) as per the target fixed by appropriate authorities from time-to-time is met.
