In Detail : NTPC Ltd, India’s largest integrated power producer, is making strategic moves to diversify beyond traditional power generation. The company is now eyeing a significant role in the power distribution sector, aiming to strengthen its presence across the entire energy value chain. This shift aligns with India’s vision for a more resilient and efficient electricity network.

In a major push towards green energy, NTPC is actively investing in green hydrogen. Its subsidiary, NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), is leading this effort with ambitious projects such as the Pudimadaka Green Hydrogen Hub in Andhra Pradesh. This facility is poised to be India’s largest, targeting the production of 1,500 tonnes per day of green hydrogen and derivatives like green methanol and sustainable aviation fuel.

To support this vision, NTPC is also pioneering innovative hydrogen production methods. At its Simhadri Power Station, the company is setting up a 1 TPD green hydrogen plant using seawater and waste heat from thermal operations. This method not only addresses water scarcity issues but also boosts the sustainability of hydrogen generation.

On the battery storage front, NTPC is rolling out multiple projects to facilitate renewable energy integration. A highlight is the 160 MWh CO₂-based battery system being developed at its Kudgi plant in Karnataka, in collaboration with Triveni Turbine and Italy’s Energy Dome. This storage technology avoids lithium and rare earths, supporting domestic manufacturing goals.

In addition to this, NTPC has issued large-scale battery storage tenders. One such project includes a 250 MW/500 MWh standalone battery storage system, aimed at enhancing grid stability and supporting renewable energy reliability. These projects reflect NTPC’s commitment to energy transition and innovation in clean technology.

Through these initiatives, NTPC is positioning itself as a comprehensive energy solutions provider. Its focus on green hydrogen, advanced storage, and distribution not only supports India’s decarbonization targets but also ensures the company remains at the forefront of the evolving energy landscape.
