Targets 60 low-carbon fuel stations by 2026

Sees hydrogen potential for medium-sized trucks

Launches HyFuels business for hydrogen refueling

CNG Fuels plans to run hydrogen refueling trials for trucks across its UK network from mid-2022, the company said in a statement Oct. 28.

Register Now The company supplies biomethane across its seven refueling stations in the UK, and plans to add hydrogen capacity alongside an expansion of its portfolio by 2026, launching the company HyFuels for this purpose.

CNG Fuels aims to have a network of 60 low-carbon refueling stations by that date supplying biomethane and other fuels as they develop, it said.

“Up to 30% of our future land will be perfectly placed to deploy multi-fuel trials on some of the busiest haulage routes in the UK,” Baden Gowrie-Smith, CFO of CNG Fuels and head of hydrogen development for HyFuels said in the statement.

“As soon as these technologies are viable, we will be ready to support our customers in adopting the latest and greatest in low carbon technology,” Gowrie-Smith added.

HyFuels is in talks with hydrogen fuel and infrastructure providers, and plans to deploy a number of mobile refueling units that can deliver hydrogen to stations on demand.

CNG Fuels said renewable biomethane cuts emissions by over 85% compared with diesel, and reduces lifetime costs by 30%-40%. However, for hydrogen would be a good decarbonization option for mid-weight trucks of below 26 mt, it said.

The company plans to allocate 100 acres of land for public access hydrogen refueling, CNG Fuels said.

The UK currently has just 11 hydrogen refueling stations, compared with over 90 in Germany.

Hydrogen pump prices are around GBP12/kg ($16.55/kg) for passenger vehicles in the UK, according to fueling station operator ITM Motive.

S&P Global Platts assessed monthly hydrogen pump prices in Germany at Eur9.50/kg ($11.01/kg) Oct. 1.

Bio CNG
CNG Fuels said demand for biomethane in heavy duty transport had doubled every year for the last five years, and could reach 10% of the UK’s high-mileage heavy trucks by 2025.

“Renewable biomethane is and will continue to be the most effective decarbonization solution for heavy transport for many years,” CEO Philip Fjeld said in the statement.

“However, we have launched HyFuels to ensure we are ready to support our customers’ journey to a multi-fuel future as new technologies become commercially viable and the fuel readily available,” Fjeld added.

The biomethane is made from waste feedstock, approved under the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation, and generates Renewable Transport Fuel Certificates, CNG Fuel said.
