The Bangla Government has started several initiatives for producing solar energy, like setting solar panels on the rooftops of various government buildings, schools, colleges and other offices. Being a renewable form of energy, it is environmental-friendly and hence much desirable.

Towards this end, the government has decided to build a huge solar dome at Eco Park on the outskirts of Kolkata. The dome would be nine storeys high. It would be covered with solar panels. This would be the first solar dome in the State at such a scale.

The project is part of the Clean City Green City mission initiated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. It would be completed by the end of the year.

Besides powering Eco Park, the dome would also increase people’s awareness on the importance of solar energy in this age of global warming.

The diameter of the dome would be 46 metres and height would be 27 metres. It would cover an area of 2.89 acres, inside the model village named Banglar Gram at Eco Park. The work for the dome has already started.

The dome would have a circular viewing gallery for the Eco Park. At various levels inside, there would be exhibits, pictures and graphics on global warming and the importance of developing non-conventional sources of energy. For going from one floor to another, there would be lifts and ramps.

A maximum of 180 kilowatts (kW) of solar power can be produced at the dome. The energy would be used for Eco Park, and any surplus energy would be sent outside.
