The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is all set to procure 99 Megawatts (MW) renewable power supply from the Rewa Ultra Mega solar project in Madhya Pradesh. There would be a huge savings to the Delhi Metro due to the 99MW as per unit cost of power will reduce from over Rs 4.50 to Rs 3.30.

In 2017, the DMRC signed a power purchase agreement with Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company to get 24 per cent of the electricity generated from 750 Mega Watt Rewa Ultra Mega Power Project. The prestigious solar park will start supplying power to the DMRC from October.

Currently, the DMRC has 23 MW of solar powers that has been produced by on its own by setting up solar plants and panels in the rooftops of the station, buildings, residential colonies and depots.

“This will be a major per cent of power and the Delhi Metro will be the first one in the country, which is going to process through a large quantity of solar powers for the functioning of the stations and other things. Also, this step will help reduce pollution because currently we use thermal powers that produce polluting substances,” said a DMRC official.

The Delhi Metro is also planning to go green completely by constructing green buildings, “The entire phase IV will be green construction with environment friendly structures, lightings, roofs and so on. Even our all the Metro buildings have rated platinum (top ranking) by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC),” official said.

Further, the DMRC has planned to set solar panels in the seven stations of the newly inaugurated Mundka-Bahadurgarh stretch. Further the Delhi Metro will use solar energy to run trains, Air-conditions, ancillary lights, landscaping set up in the stations, green structures and in the other things that consumes electricity and cause pollution.

Moreover, the Delhi Metro has planned to procure 427 electric AC mini-buses, which will provide last mile connectivity to the stations for the passengers.
