According to the latest data of SolarPower Europe, Europe had installed 650K units of residential battery energy storage systems in 2021, and has now exceeded a million units in 2022.

Europe’s total residential battery installations had risen from about 3GWh in 2020 to more than 5GWh in 2021, before exceeding 9GWh this year, with the top five contributors being Germany, Italy, Austria, UK, and Switzerland that occupy 88% of the market, where Germany sits at first place with a ratio of 59%.

Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe, commented that it is no accident that residential battery storage is on the rise each year seeing how both solar power and energy storage can lower the obstinately high electricity tariffs.

Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) estimates a twofold increase in users with installations of solar and battery energy storage systems to happen in 2026 at 3.5 million, and an increase of nearly 40% could occur under the best scenario provided that there is a correct political framework. The association also urges various governments to propose comprehensive EU energy storage strategies, as well as lay down the 200GW target for 2030.
